Collection<\/h1>\n

The Collection DKM combines five very different areas: Contemporary art since the 1960s \u2013 Art from the Far East that is well over 2000 years old and also contemporary art from China, Korea, and Japan – Art from Ancient Egypt – Classical and contemporary photography \u2013 Ceramics and glass from 5,000 years of cultural history.<\/p>\n

The contemporary art at the Collection DKM contains works by more than 300 artists. About one third of the total work of the sculptor Ernst Hermanns are on display, including his huge “D\u00fcsseldorf space”. Ulrich R\u00fcckriem is represented through numerous sculptural and graphic works. Further works or groups of works are contributed by Ai Weiwei, Song Dong, Ulrich Erben, Norbert Frensch, Hamish Fulton, Hayato Goto, Nikolaus Koliusis, Norbert Kricke, Raimund Kummer, Lee Ufan, Richard Long, Bernd Minnich, Christiane M\u00f6bus, Ben Nicholson, Kazuhito Nishikawa, Blinky Palermo, Qui Shi-Hua, Erich Reusch, Jan J. Schoonhoven, Richard Serra, Yuji Takeoka, Thomas Virnich, Raimund van Well, Hannes Vogel, Manfred Vogel, Erwin Wortelkamp.<\/p>\n

In the series of works from ancient China of particular prominence is a monumental 90 cm high marble head of Buddha from the Northern Qi Dynasty (550 \u2013 577). Also on display from around the same time (386 \u2013 907) are other heads and statues of Buddha, of a sentry, and of a civil servant made of marble or terracotta. The Collection DKM is keen that funeral sculptures communicate something from the original context. So figures are not presented in isolation, but as a group of 14 soldiers, or as funeral procession with 53 figures. Even figures of animals – for example camels, cattle – that have served as grave gifts. Ancestral images, scholars\u2019 stones, scrolls and furniture from the 18th and 19th century complete this part of the collection. Separate sections are devoted to statues and reliefs from Gandh\u0101ra (Afghanistan \/ Pakistan, 1st \u2013 4th century), from Ayutthaya (Thailand, 17th \u2013 18th century), to the Khmer (Cambodia), and also artifacts (screens, ceramics, scrolls ) from 19th century Japan.<\/p>\n

Among the works from ancient Egypt only a few \u2013 Osiris statuette, Ibis heads, receptacles \u2013 are shown in the Museum DKM, as the majority are on permanent loan to the Museum for Antiquity in Basel.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The cover of the inaugural exhibition “Lines of quiet beauty” at the Museum DKM is taken from the area of photography: Ulrich Tillmann\u2019s “Meditations.” A major part are travel photographs of the 19th <\/sup>century from Egypt. Erotic photography is represented by Wilhelm von Gloeden and Robert Mapplethorpe. Peter Keetman, Adolf Lazi. Herbert List, Albert Renger-Patzsch, Ludwig Windstosser and others contribute to the classical photography collection. Contemporary photography is represented by, amongst others, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Chun Kyungwoo, Candida H\u00f6fer, Ryuji Miyamoto, Jaroslav Poncar, Claudia Terstappen.<\/p>\n

In the Collection DKM particular attention is focused on ceramics and glass, from ancient times to the present, and from different cultures. There are small ointment vessels from the early days of the Egyptian Old Empire (3,000 \u2013 2,200). Porcelain from China dated from 9th<\/sup> to 19th <\/sup>century. Receptacles in the form of elephants created by the Khmer in Cambodia. Glazed pottery of the 19th century from Japan is also displayed. The present time is represented by porcelain of KPM, Arzberg, glass bowls by M. Bauer and glass vases by Wilhelm Wagenfeld.<\/p>\n

Diversity and variety of the works characterize the art of the collection DKM.
