One of our main works in the museum. It was first shown at the Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen (1994 – 1995). Ernst Hermanns conceived this work for the large room of the Kunstverein under the then director Dr Raimund Stecker. A copy of the room in the Kunstverein was arranged by the architect Hans Rohr (Baden, CH) in the museum’s new building. This provided a new home for the work.
One room: several groups of sculptures that seem to stand alone, but in their entirety form an intensive network of relationships. The objects – spheres and steles – are made of polished stainless steel, smooth but not reflective, solid and unadorned. What connects them is the surface and the space between them, charged with a tension reminiscent of a magnetic field
Ernst Hermanns (1914 – 2000) made the space between objects the subject of his sculptural work. He called his works “spatial constellations”, in which he made space, time and movement tangible. “Form and space are of equal value”, he said, “space becomes a necessary part of sculpture”.
